STRUCTURAL INVESTIGATION

BHP Laboratories provides Structural Investigation services to clients in the construction industry, including main contractors, designers, consulting engineers, owners/developers, and other relevant parties.

These services are made up of field-based work and laboratory work, and includes:

  • Desk study

  • Site visit and development of proposal for scope of testing and investigation

  • Concrete Testing

      • Insitu compressive strength assessment of concrete by core drilling
      • Concrete surface assessment by Rebound Hammer (Schmidt) to determine consistency of rebound values and locate positions for further inspection
      • Reinforcement cover and layout testing – cover, spacing, size
      • Concrete GPR scanning to determine layout out of multiple layers of reinforcement to a depth of 800mm
      • Concrete breakouts to confirm findings of scanning
      • Corrosion assessment of embedded reinforcement (Half-Cell)
      • Corrosion assessment potential of concrete surface (Resistivity)
      • Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) testing
      • Determination of water absorption of concrete (permeability)
      • Pull-Off testing to determine the condition of the concrete surface for the application of repair materials and/or waterproofing
      • Laboratory testing of cores and dust samples including:
        • Visual Assessment
        • Density
        • Compressive Strength
        • Carbonation
        • Chloride Ingress Profile
        • Sulphate Content
        • Cement Content
        • High Alumina Cement (HAC)
        • Water-Cement Ratio

  • Steel Testing

      • Sampling of reinforcement within concrete for laboratory testing
      • Sampling of steel beams for laboratory testing
      • Undertaking Ultrasonic Thickness Measurements (UTM)
      • Portable Hardness Testing for in-situ estimation of tensile strength
      • Laboratory testing of steel samples including:
        • UTS
        • Yield strength
        • Percentage Elongation
        • Hardness Testing
        • Micro / Macro Testing
        • Chemical Analysis of steel samples
        • Detailed metallurgical investigation to confirm steel type and weldability assessment
  • Anchor Testing and Proof Loading

      • Anchor testing for all applications (tensile and shear loading)
      • Scaffold Tie testing
      • Precast concrete lifting elements
      • Precast concrete slab lifting elements
      • Chemically anchored reinforcement bars and bolts

  • Major Structural Investigation projects

      • Bridge Site Investigation projects including
        • Appointment as PSCS
        • Traffic Management

        • Provision of underbridge set-up and/or scaffold set-up for access to underside

  • Assessment of existing concrete slabs for development

      • BHP provides a one-stop shop for assessment of older buildings and in particular for clients looking to develop new technologies on existing concrete slabs. In most cases, this will include the loading of slabs with much heavier equipment. BHP provides the following services:
        • Site visit and development of proposal for scope of testing and investigation
        • Concrete coring and reinstatement of all destructive testing
        • Insitu Testing of the hardcore and materials below including:
          • Large breakouts, saw-cuts, box-cutting by large diameter coring
          • Excavation of trial pits for inspection and testing
          • Plate Bearing Tests to determine CBR % and K Modulus of Subgrade Reactivity and Approximate Bearing Capacity
          • Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) probe testing
          • Light Wight Deflectometer (LWD) testing
          • DPH and DPSH Dynamic Probing to 10m to profile the resistance of the ground below the slab

          • Density
          • Compressive Strength
